When Access Becomes the Enemy: A 65' Case Study Every New Build Should Learn From
On a recent delivery from Seattle to Newport Beach, I encountered a textbook example of how poor access quietly sabotages reliability. A US-built 65-footer had its port generator buried behind a crew closet, accessible only through a 2-by-3-foot door. Routine checks—fluids, belts, coolant, water pump—meant wedging into a locker, balancing on a 5-inch gap over wires and hoses, and pulling panels blind. Maintenance didn’t just fall behind; it became avoidable by design. This is exactly the kind of oversight that turns a high-spec build into a high-friction ownership experience—and it’s completely preventable at the concept stage.
Here’s the ripple effect. Because access was an afterthought, every task took longer, introduced risk to adjacent systems, and discouraged regular service. To make matters worse, the watermaker filters were stacked in the same locker. Changing them meant dripping salt water directly onto the generator and wiring, compounding corrosion risks and complicating warranty conversations. The solution I recommended was simple: enlarge the door panel for proper human access, segregate saltwater service items from electric equipment, and clean up the hose and wiring runs to remove that precarious “footbridge” over critical systems. Small design changes. Big results.
If you’re planning a new build for 2026, this is where smart project management pays for itself. At Baranof Yachts, we push for early-access reviews: can a full-grown tech reach both ends of the generator? Is there daylight around belts and pumps? Are filters positioned to avoid saltwater drips on electrics? These checks don’t add glamour to the spec sheet, but they save you countless hours, dollars, and headaches over the life of the yacht.
Design access, not excuses.
Separate wet work from electrics.
Plan for system failures before they plan your day.
Owners deserve yachts that run beautifully and are easy to live with. That starts with decisions made on paper, long before the tools come out. If you’re mapping your build now, let’s pressure-test your machinery spaces, service paths, and redundancy plans so maintenance is simple, not heroic. Trust our expertise—easier to maintain means more time cruising and less time waiting on repairs.
