Coordinated Builds, Zero Guesswork
During this four-year period, I was also involved in the planning and specification of Selene models ranging from 42 to 78 feet, including multiple custom configurations beyond standard shipyard options.
Fully Coordinated:
Owner specifications
Shipyard milestones
Warranty and service items for dealership inventory
Support for an East Coast affiliate’s projects
Luxury Hot Tubs Are Never Cold
The hot tub was fully isolated for future replacement without structural impact. A dedicated bilge storage tank was added to capture hot water during anchorage changes, allowing rapid reuse without reheating.
Result:
Efficient operation
Proven success in Mexico, the San Juan Islands, and Western Canada
Enhanced owner enjoyment with minimal system complexity
Built For Easier Upkeep.
Serviceability of sea chest baskets was prioritized. Stainless baskets were split into two sections, allowing removal without interference from adjacent systems and minimizing saltwater exposure during maintenance.
Result:
Faster, simpler servicing
Cleaner engine room
Increased likelihood of routine maintenance being performed correctly
See More. Enjoy More.
We redesigned the flybridge seating by introducing a raised step to:
Improve helm visibility to the bow during docking
Enhance sightlines from the observation love seat
Result:
Improved operational awareness
Increased comfort and usability
Seating consistently occupied by owners and guests
A more welcoming and less utilitarian flybridge layout
Bigger Vision, Smarter Build
Initially conceived as an 86-foot vessel, the project evolved during design and construction. I engaged Greg Marshall Design to assist with engine room layout and systems engineering. Their recommendation was to lengthen the vessel to 92 feet, significantly improving machinery access and salon volume.
The result was a successful collaboration combining the sea-kindly design of Guido de Groot with robust, service-focused systems engineering.
Solving Sounds
During initial sea trials, hull slap from harbor wakes was identified. I developed a hull extension under the swim platform to carry buoyancy farther aft, increasing waterline length and improving stern behavior. Calculations were completed in collaboration with a naval architect colleague who was also an ABS Surveyor.
Result:
Dramatically reduced hull slap at dock and anchor
Improved following-sea tracking
Increased waterline length and aft buoyancy
Better overall performance and ride quality
Quieter vessel when stationary
Positive feedback from Horizon’s engineering team
Where Everyone Wants to Sit
The flybridge observation settee was widened, raised slightly, and fitted with a grab rail to improve safety and comfort. Additional storage was incorporated beneath.
Result:
Became a favorite guest seating area underway and at dock
Improved safety and ergonomics
Consistently occupied for cruising, sunsets, and morning coffee
Smarter Space, Better Living
We redesigned the crew cabin using offset bunks, allowing:
A wider lower berth
Increased hanging locker and drawer space
Addition of a second portlight for natural light
This was achieved by reclaiming non-critical storage space without moving structural bulkheads. The design was reviewed and approved by Horizon’s naval architect at the time, James Fwu, and later repeated on Maximus III.
A Smoother Ride, Everywhere
For West Coast cruising—including extended transits from Mexico to Alaska—we specified a finer bow entry while maintaining appropriate flare.
Result:
Reduced pounding and smoother ride in head seas
Improved efficiency and drier operation
Significantly reduced chine slap at dock and anchor
Quieter nights aboard for guests
Safer, more comfortable conditions for crew underway
Seamless From Start to Finish
I recently received my custom yacht from Baranof, and the entire process was seamless. Their expertise in choosing layouts and finishes was invaluable. Highly recommend for anyone seeking a custom yacht build.
